Moisture Protection Solution for Prepainted Steel Coils Shipped to Nigeria

Moisture Protection Solution

Project Background

For roofing sheet factories in tropical countries, steel coil protection during ocean transportation is a critical issue. High temperature, high humidity, long shipping time, and temperature differences between day and night can easily cause condensation inside containers.

One of our Nigerian customers is a roofing sheet manufacturer. The customer imported Prepainted Steel Coils for roofing sheet production with the specification:

Because the coil thickness is relatively thin, surface protection is especially important. If moisture enters the package or condensation forms inside the container, the coil surface may oxidize, which can affect production stability, finished roofing sheet appearance, and customer resale confidence.

Customer Challenge

Nigeria and many other tropical markets, such as Congo, Kenya, and Somalia, have hot and humid climates. During international shipping, containers may experience repeated temperature changes.

When the outside temperature changes sharply, water vapor inside the container may condense on the inner walls and ceiling. These water droplets can fall onto the cargo or increase humidity inside the container.

For Prepainted Steel Coils, this creates several risks:

  • Water droplets forming on the container inner wall
  • Moisture entering the outer package
  • Higher risk of surface oxidation
  • Possible color coating damage or white rust risk near exposed edges
  • Packaging softening or weakening during long shipment
  • Production problems after the coils arrive at the roofing factory
  • Extra loss caused by customer claims or rejected materials

For a roofing sheet factory, damaged coils are not only a material loss. They may delay production schedules, reduce finished product quality, and affect local customer delivery.

The customer needed a practical solution to reduce moisture risk before shipment, during inland transportation, and inside the container.

Our Risk Analysis

After reviewing the customer’s destination, product type, coil thickness, and transportation process, we found that the key risk came from three stages:

  1. Container condition before loading
  2. Moisture control during sea transportation
  3. Rain protection during truck transportation to the port

For tropical markets, moisture prevention cannot rely on only one packing material. It requires a full-process control system from container inspection to loading, trucking, and final packaging protection.

Therefore, Witop Material provided a moisture protection solution designed specifically for Prepainted Steel Coils shipped to tropical countries.

Our Solution

1. Strict Container Inspection Before Loading

Color Differences Inpection

Before loading, we carefully inspect the container condition to make sure it is suitable for steel coil shipment.

The inspection includes:

  • Checking whether the container is clean and dry
  • Checking the container roof, side walls, floor, and door seals
  • Confirming there are no visible holes, cracks, or water leakage points
  • Making sure the container has good sealing performance
  • Rejecting containers with poor condition or possible leakage risk

This first step helps reduce the risk of seawater leakage, rainwater entry, and moisture accumulation during transportation.

2. Desiccants Placed Inside the Container

To reduce humidity inside the container, we place desiccants inside the container before shipment.

The desiccants help absorb moisture from the air and reduce the possibility of condensation forming on the container walls and ceiling.

For long-distance shipping to tropical countries, container desiccants are especially important because the cargo may experience different climates and temperature changes during transit.

3. PVC Rainproof Cover During Truck Transportation

Wrap Double PVC Film

If the coils need to be transported by truck to the loading port, we require rain protection during the full inland transportation process.

The steel coils are covered with PVC rainproof tarpaulin during truck transport to prevent rainwater from directly contacting the package before container loading.

This step is important because moisture risk does not only happen at sea. If rainwater enters the package before loading, the risk of oxidation may increase during the whole voyage.

4. Additional Desiccants Added on the Outer Package

To further reduce moisture risk, we also add desiccants on the surface layer or outer part of the product package.

This helps lower the possibility of water vapor entering the package and provides an additional moisture-control layer around the steel coil.

For thin-gauge Prepainted Steel Coils such as 0.17 mm, this extra protection is valuable because the material surface is more sensitive to moisture, pressure, and handling conditions.

Customer Value

The moisture protection solution helped the Nigerian customer reduce transportation risk and improve confidence in long-distance imports.

For the customer, the value was not only better packaging, but also a more reliable supply chain for roofing sheet production.

Key benefits included:

  • Lower risk of condensation-related moisture damage
  • Reduced possibility of surface oxidation during shipping
  • Better protection for thin-gauge Prepainted Steel Coils
  • Safer inland transportation before port loading
  • More stable material condition after arrival
  • Lower chance of production delay at the roofing factory
  • Better finished roofing sheet appearance and quality control
  • Stronger confidence when importing steel coils to tropical markets

For roofing sheet factories, material stability is directly connected to production efficiency. A protected coil helps reduce unexpected losses and supports smoother daily production.

Project Summary

This Nigeria project shows that steel coil moisture protection should be planned based on the destination climate and full transportation process.

For tropical markets such as Nigeria, Congo, Kenya, and Somalia, container condensation is a common but often underestimated risk. If the container is not inspected carefully, if humidity is not controlled, or if the coils are exposed to rain before loading, moisture may enter the package and cause surface oxidation.

At Witop Material, we do not only supply Prepainted Steel Coils. We help customers evaluate real shipping risks, improve packing protection, and reduce hidden losses before the goods leave the factory.

For roofing sheet manufacturers, wholesalers, and distributors in tropical countries, a reliable moisture protection plan can protect product value, production stability, and customer trust.
